I very much enjoyed reading the article on Turkey in the January edition of Geographical (From the cradle to the grave). Over the past ten years, my wife and I have been frequent visitors to the south and southwest of this very interesting country. We usually go in either May or September to avoid the excessive heat of summer and the package tourists. Hiring a car and travelling inland through the mountains and forests and stopping off at small towns and villages gives one a better insight to the real Turkey, away from the hustle of the coastal towns. Dave Gittus, Newport, Shropshire
- Business brief - House votes to double fees for high-tech visas — Federal fees that companies pay for visas to recruit skilled foreign workers would double to provide more training and education for American workers under a bill the House approved Friday. The $500 visa fee would rise to $1,000 if the Senate agrees as expected next week. The high-tech industry supported the increase in exchange for a dramatic expansion in the H-1B visa program that it had made a top legislative priority.

Interior Design Company141 Normandy Las Vegas, NV 89101
Literally and symbolically, Interior Designs is about interior and exterior designs. Its form parallels its content: it is divided into four major sections, each with approximately twenty chapters of between one and four pages. Instead of relying on plot, Jaffe writes short passages to illustrate various aspects of design, primarily the architecture of houses. In these passages the narrator describes all the houses she has lived in, none of which she has occupied for more than three years. In the section entitled The First House, the narrator and her husband, a rabbi, look for a new house. Instead of finding the right house, the right house seems to find them (throughout the novel structural components such as doors and windows are personified). The new house also has light shining from more than one direction, an entry for proper greetings and farewells, and a sense of solidity, all of which make the narrator feel infinite. Upon moving to the house, the narrator considers philosophical questions concerning fate, luck, guilt, and desire. These questions are exemplary of the novels themes–in every chapter of the novel, some aspect of exterior design is portrayed literally to illustrate metaphorically human emotions or philosophical issues. Sometimes the metaphors are a bit too obvious, and occasionally the narrator intrudes to explain them lest they slip past readers. For example, when looking at a house she decides against, she says all except one structural flaw is amendable. The minor flaws in the house are like little and medium-sized mistakes we all make in life–they were not irrevocable. For the most part, however, Jaffe has a wonderfully poetic style; remarkably enough, despite the lack of plot, the novel moves forward at a quick pace. The idea that you cant go home again recurs throughout the novel, but the implication is interestingly reversed, suggesting that to return to an earlier phase in ones fife would be to backslide. Textual and symbolic circular patterns develop in the novel that integrate the chapters with the text as a whole and that unite individuals with others and in a spiritual sense with the universe. Entertaining, witty, and full of philosophical insights, Interior Designs explores ways to find and maintain personal and spiritual peace.
Sterling Ruby, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles Sterling Ruby is a cool name, a drag queen name, a British spys name. I dont know him, and hadnt heard of him before I saw his show at Marc Foxx. That doesnt matter because his show, Interior Designer, which looks at sexuality, namely transgendered people, and flirts with theoretical schizophrenia, requires only sympathy for his observations and the art he makes. Four delicately scratched and key carved Formica laminate monoliths, each 7 x 4 x 4 are at the center of Interior Designer. Their tinted surface has dirty spots, handprints, chips, and evidence of handling. They recall the laminate prefabs in the displays and dressing rooms found in department stores. In their material and dimension they suggest–and maybe desire to be–video booth jack off chambers.

SECURITY: Just as Cisco Systems chief John Chambers is never short on vision, hes also never at a loss for a left-field metaphor. Speaking at a security conference last month, Chambers said that the network of the future will be so complex, thanks to mobility and collaboration, that it will need a security approach similar to the human bodys immune system. For the majority of attacks on the human body, youd never even know it occurred, Chambers said. Thats where we have to go with virtual and physical security. Weve got to move to innovative, proactive security architectures designed to open standards that will interface to each other effectively.
Businesses continue to place a high priority on protecting their infrastructures from cyber-attack, according to analyst group Canalys, with the latest spending patterns showing corporate security budgets up by a third in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Spending on security in EMEA during the second quarter of 2004 totalled [pounds sterling]273.7 million - an increase of almost [pounds sterling]70 million over the same period a year ago. The report states that spending on enterprise security hardware devices in EMEA rose 53% year-on-year, while software sales grew 17% over the same period.
SECURITY: Hossein Eslambolchi, ATTs CTO and president of ATT Research Labs, is a big believer in packet networks, but warns that network security these days is so pitiful that a hacker today could bring down the entire Internet with 100 lines of code. Its almost impossible to scale by putting all the security at the end of the network. It just doesnt work, Eslambolchi said at last months Interop conference in Las Vegas, according to Light Reading. We need to go somewhere in between. an intelligent network with smart devices.

Business Editors Equity Consumer Products Launches New Line of Tub Tints Bath Toys at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores 2000
I believe in answering kids, questions honestly because I want them to keep asking and I want them to hear the truth from me first whenever possible. Bath time at my house is often a forum for serious discussion. Jesus, death made the tub Club agenda recently when my four-year-old piped up, why was Jesus nailedt? My husband and I maintain that all people are good, even if some do bad things. I think my kids can relate to that. After all, theyre forgivable - even when caught in illicit acts like using permanent black marker to,write on new white boots, or performing an experiment involving freezing a mixture of large quantities of laundry detergent, sand and water. Sometimes, weve discovered, its not so easy to tell the transgressors from the righteous. Back to the bathtub. Maybe its confusing that this sweet little baby in the manger who everyone makes a fuss over can grow up to such a gory demise. And Jesus is a good guy!
SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 16, 1998–If you experience discomfort when bathing a child or cleaning the tub, then the Tubsider offers the perfect solution. This patented, revolutionary new product is an orthopedically designed seat, used outside the tub. Tubsider eliminates pain and injuries to your spine, knees, ankles and joints when performing chores at the side of the tub by placing you in an ergonomically correct kneeling/seated position similar to the popular office chairs.Back and neck pain are the number one complaints made by patients to their doctors. says Dr. Mark Frawley, a licensed Chiropractor and inventor of the Tubsider. Tubsider reduces strain to your spine and neck through the use of a padded seat that is specifically angled to provide total support of your body weight. In addition, ankle pain and injuries no longer occur since the seat eliminates the need to sit back onto your ankles. The Tubsider also makes tubside activities more comfortable and enjoyablethrough the use of thick pads that cushion knees and arms. Current users of the product claim that Tubsider greatly enhances the quality of time spent bathing their child and provides much needed relief when cleaning the tub, washing a dog and assisting in bathing the elderly or disabled.

Q We have a seven-year-old daughter who is blind due to retinopathy of prematurity and has an amputation of her right leg above the knee for which she wears an artificial limb. She has mild cerebral palsy and is unable to sit unsupported. She often gets constipated.A I agree that toilet training is important for your daughter, not only for purposes of hygiene but also for her self-esteem. However, it is important not to toilet train her before she is ready. That could delay the process and even make her constipation problem worse. However, if she shows the proper interest in toilet training, you can try it.First, you need to set up a mechanism so your daughter can sit on the toilet without losing her balance. This is essential for any child who is being toilet trained. You may want to have something she can hold onto with her hands.

Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. American First Mortgage Source Inc. will open Feb. 1 at 504 W. Mission Ave., in Escondido. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.
Nursing home care in Utah is improving, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Wednesday. Many of those improvements were linked directly by care center administrators to a quality improvement project through HealthInsight, Medicares Quality Improvement Organization in Utah. The organization is part of the national Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on raising standards of care in nursing homes across the country and giving consumers more comparison information.

If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional-such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker-who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:
Hypnosis is a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings. But its not all that different from being absorbed in thought, or reading a book. With hypnosis, you are far more open to suggestion, at least, to suggestions compatible with what you are motivated to achieve. It is a form of intense receptive concentration. Accordingly, hypnosis often is used to modify behavior and overcome phobias and bad habits-it can help you make changes that youve been unable to make otherwise. Questions notwithstanding, hypnosis seems to be an effective modality for many people. In fact, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel has endorsed its use for the relief of various types of chronic pain. As a relaxation technique, hypnosis can help reduce your stress. Its also used to relieve phobias, lessen anxiety, break addictions and to ease symptoms of conditions such as asthma or allergy. Using hypnosis can help patients control nausea and vomiting from cancer medications and morning sickness, reduce bleeding during surgery, steady the heartbeat and bring down blood pressure.

“About 85% of our clientele is Hispanic and we speak other languages. We specialize in urban areas.” Perez credited the states auto insurance reforms for creating a competitive market for insurers that has led to lower premiums. “Before auto insurance reform, no insurance companies wanted to give appointments to agencies that deal with urban markets because of fear of fraud and stolen vehicles. Now there is an agency in Patterson able to provide private insurance.”
Almost every day the media are telling us of motoring offences involving young drivers. Some have a valid driving licence and their vehicles may be taxed, but an awful lot do not have valid insurance cover. Today I was enlightened as to the reason for these young drivers not being insured. The law of the land states a person of either sex must be 17 years of age or over to hold a driving licence and before they are allowed to drive a car they must be insured and their vehicle taxed, but the question is, from where do they obtain this elusive certificate?
Electricity bills depend on how much electricity is used each month. Soon auto insurance premiums, too, may be metered, based partly on how much the car is driven. That is the goal of Progressive Auto Insurance, which is testing a system that uses global positioning satellite technology to track when, where and how much its auto insurance customers drive — and then charges them accordingly. A pilot version of the program is being tested in Texas. The system is the brainchild of Robert J. McMillan, a business development leader at Progressive, a major auto insurance company based in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002;187(3), Part 2, focuses on how and why womens health and gender-based competencies should be woven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education. It discusses appropriate components of the health and medical curriculum, and combining health care competencies with educational objectives and models for teaching reproductive health.

ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone. The costs associated with purchasing radio advertising time reflect this emphasis on reaching the commuter audience. The four time slots, or dayparts, offered for advertisers by most radio stations are the morning drive, daytime, afternoon drive, and evening. The two most expensivebut also most effective advertising slotsare the morning and afternoon drive times.

This shimmering 2005 performance by the Paris Opera Ballet at the Palais Gamier arrives with new costumes and decor by fashion icon Christian Lacroix. At least in Rubies, they dont quite equal Barbara Karinskas couturiere wit from New York City Ballets original production. The prize rendering here is Diamonds, in which Agnes Letestu, Jean-Guillaume Bart, and the incomparable POB corps triumph over the finicky editing to distill the spirit of Petipa through Balanchines breathtaking design. While magnificently dispatched by principals Alessio Garbone and Aurelie Dupont (whose batterie could draw applause from a statue), Rubies misses the roguish, competitive tone and showbiz spirit of the best American productions. What also earns this Jewels its recommendation is the accompanying hour-long documentary. Our guides include Lacroix, POB director Brigitte Lefevre, the Balanchine Trusts Barbara Horgan, and several of the dancers, whose insights (especially Letestus) make you want to watch the entire ballet again.

LAWS OF ATTRACTION — * 1/2 — Julianne Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Frances Fisher; rated PG-13 (vulgarity, profanity, brief sex, violence, brief drugs). You can kind of understand why everything is forced and frantic in “Laws of Attraction” — why its performances are all over the map, why its score is broad and obtrusive. The material is so familiar, so predictable, that it needs something — anything –to set it apart from any number of generic, studio-generated romantic comedies.

The demand for more education and real people to share their experiences with plastic surgery has grown incredibly all over the world, explained Dr. Mayer, co-director with Richard Fleming, M.D. of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. We are excited to participate in a show like Cosmetic Surgery Live, which takes the epicenter of beauty (LA) to the United Kingdom. Dr. Mayer will perform a new FDA-approved procedure called the ENDOTINE Cheek Lift which is ideal for patients ages 35-50 who are not looking for a radical makeover, but a more understated rejuvenation that brings them back 7-10 years. With its five points of contact and absorbable features, the new ENDOTINE device gives patients natural, long-lasting results. It also enhances cheek volume - key to obtaining a more youthful appearance. During a cheeklift procedure using ENDOTINE, a half-inch incision is made inside a crows foot alongside the lower eye. Once the underlying muscle and tissue has been elevated to lift the cheek area, the new ENDOTINE Mid Face is placed to capture and elevate the cheek, securing it into the bone and holding it in position until the soft tissue re-adheres to the cheek bone entirely. The ENDOTINE gradually absorbs completely, at which time the tissue is securely attached to the cheekbone lifting the mid-face.
The researchers also conducted an online survey of 644 individuals who reported actively considering surgery. Interviewees said they thought they could minimize their risks by researching the procedure and the surgeons who specialize in that area. Two-thirds of the interview participants said the potential risks would not deter them from seeking surgery, while one-third said they would need to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. The research was funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
In addition, plastic surgeons have sought to develop better techniques for the treatment and repair of skin damage resulting from burns, and improved techniques for the repair of congenital deformities of the hand and craniofacial reconstruction for repair of cleft lip and palate , one of the most common plastic surgeries for babies, children, and adolescents

A relatively small percentage of plastic surgery procedures are performed on patients under 18 for cosmetic purposes. These procedures include otoplasty (correcting prominent ears) and rhinoplasty (reshaping the nose); and breast augmentation and breast reduction. Data from the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons on cosmetic procedures performed on patients under age 18 are shown in the accompanying table.

Proceeds benefit Wisconsin Jobs Daughters. Ott has the choice of receiving the home valued at $350,000 or $150,000 cash. Fairgoers bought more than 30,000 tickets. News is compiled by managing editor Tom Bagsarian. Send him your news at tbagsarian@hanleywood.com.
THE DERBY suburb of Crewton does not exude cheap tat, so the place was understandably surprised to learn yesterday that its houses will fetch less money than any in the land. The average property price in Crewton was just pounds 29,052 last year, according to research by the financial information group Experian, published yesterday. It prompted some typically delicious north-south comparisons as the same research showed that the price of a home in St Johns Wood, north London (pounds 401,303), will buy you 14 Crewton semis. Being cheap is a double-edged sword, if Crewtons response to its new- found fame was anything to go by. For estate agents like Chris Brown of Boxall, Brown and Jones (who recently sold a two-bedroom place for pounds 14,000) it means a pounds 1,000 fixed fee can represent 5 per cent of the sale price, so “generally speaking its good to sell at that price,” he admitted. But Abdelkrim Baka wants to sell his 10-bedroom guest house on London Road and move back to Tunisia. He put it up for sale at pounds 160,000 five years ago. Yesterday he dropped it to pounds 115,000. “I bought it from my brother in 1983,” he said. “I thought he was doing me a favour.” Crewton owes its existence and its demise (prices have fallen almost 15 per cent in three years) to the railways. Rows of immaculate terraces were built for the railway workers at the turn of the century. The stone plaques set in their patterned brickwork read “Park View Villas”, “Rosamund Cottages”, “Bond Villas”. Neither is the local infant school new-build in cheap brick. “Board School, 1890″ reads the engraving on its stone wall - the kind of authenticity buyers in the south east will kill for. But authenticity means less when the British Railways Technical Centre (which made trains and wagons for BR) has closed down and hundreds of jobs have gone. Its a far cry from St Johns Wood, where prices have climbed 13.5 per cent in three years. Even that pales by comparison with Virginia Water, Surrey, where a 92.2 per cent climb between 1995 and 1998 took the average property price to pounds 268,409 last year. Other than Virginia Water and Richmond, each of the top 20 most expensive locations are in London. The 20 cheapest areas are in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Staffordshire and Durham. It all looks extremely gloomy for the north but in fact it is not. It is in the souths sensational climb that the bad signs lie, according to Experian. If nothing else, the figures show there is good value to be found in places like Crewton, while the souths extraordinary growth proves the spectre of negative equity is now looming. “We would be staggered to see this kind of growth continue without severe inflationary pressures,” said Bruno Rost of Experian. “There is strong potential for the bottoming out of the market and we dont want to see prices out of control. It is the north that demonstrates the most steady growth. There is huge over-capacity in the south east, with 23 per cent growth on average, while capacity does exist further north.” “Its not all breeze-blocks up here,” said one Crewton resident yesterday. “There are even plans to revive the old canal here and create a marina. Things are never as bad they sound.” Experians figures are based on the recorded price of sales, not the number of transactions. This helps explain why the notoriously pricey areas of Hampstead and Islington in north London (where most sales were relatively cheap flats or maisonettes) do not fare as well as East Sheen and Kilburn. Marketing on the Internet is broken up into six chapters packed full of information from online marketing strategies to online media relations. Although the book does give you a few examples of company stategies it concentrates more on the psychological methods behind marketing on the web.
Many of the old rules and limitations no longer apply to this new form of marketing, which seeks to talk with, rather than at, the reader. At last count, the Internet links some 46,318 computer networks at sites in 91 countries worldwide. More than half (27,614) the networks are in the United States; not surprisingly, some 20% of these are in California. According to the Internet Domain Survey, conducted in January 1995 by Net Wizards, some 4,852,000 host computers were linked to the Internet. The greatest percentage of these computers were being used in business (27%) and education (23%). The Internet Society estimates an average of 10 users per host. Total users on the net are approaching 50 million, with another million or so getting connected monthly.

Richard Siao has been named senior vice president, sales planning operations. In that role, Siao leads the sales planning group. He joined Warner Home Video in 2003.
Despite 2000s slow-motion finale, the home video category showed little sign of lost luster, thanks to a new format and the resilience of the entertainment industry. Old and new formats–VHS and DVD–vied for precious shelf space in drug chains. By the end of the year, VHS remained the dominant format, but as CVS spokesman Michael DiAngelis recently noted, the increasing affordability of the hardware has helped increase household penetration for DVD. More drug chain customers are buying DVDs, as was evident in a study by New York City-based research firm Alexander Associates, which tracks VHS and DVD products. Its latest study of store-data (excluding on-line and catalog sales) showed that in 2000 the drug channels DVD unit volume grew from 1.1 percent of all retail units sold in 1999 to 2.4 percent of units sold. Meanwhile, VHS unit sales in the drug channel declined slightly from 1.8 percent in 1999 to 1.7 percent of retail units sold in 2000, according to Greg Durkin, research director for Alexander Associates. As noted in a previous issue of Drug Store News, the five top VHS sellers for 2000 were mainly family titles, headed by bestseller Tarzan (Buena Vista), followed by Star Wars: Episode 1 (Fox), Toy Story 2 (Buena Vista), Stuart Little (Columbia TriStar), and Little Mermaid IV: Return to the Sea (Buena Vista), according to Video Business magazine.

Business Editors/Health Medical Writers Access Health has agreed to acquire HealthCare, which had been previously announced and subsequently delayed due to financing issues, in a share exchange for 4 million shares of the common stock of Access Health. The President and Chief Operating Officer of Access Health are shareholders in HealthCare and will receive shares of Access Health upon completion of the acquisition. Based on its unaudited financial statements, HealthCare is believed to have generated revenues of approximately $2 million during 2000, with modest profits. In addition to the clinical locations, the acquisition includes management rights under the HMO and managed care contracts, access to a database of over 40,000 patient names, and practical operations within which to test and refine Access Healths programs, products and services prior to bringing them to regional and national markets.
HMOs: An Alternative THE ACCUMULATED COST OF health care in New Mexico — as in virtually all other areas of the nation — is enough at times to cause severe indigestion, if not outright cardiac arrest. Its likely why 80 percent of New Mexicans with some form of health insurance are under what is called a type of “managed care,” including Medicare and Medicaid. And a lot of that “managed care” is the choice by many companies to opt for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to contain costs while providing adequate benefits to employees.
The drama of mergers, acquisitions, downsizing, and the managed redirection of health care resources away from acute care hospitals and high-technology medicine has overshadowed another change in the contemporary health care culture (Duva, 1990; Edmonds Hallman, 1995; Gabel, 1997; Salmon, 1995). The purpose of this article is to discuss the growing interest in alternative health care and offer an explanation for this phenomenon. Alternative health care is not easily defined. Often it is explained by describing what it is not — the scientific practice of nursing or medicine as it has come to be understood in first world countries during this century. Physicians who are sympathetic to the movement say that alternative therapy encompasses a broad spectrum of practices and beliefs (Eisenberg et al., 1993), and reflects a holistic world view of health and illness that is outside the biomedical mainstream of medicine (Rauckhorst, 1997). Other writers compare and contrast traditional and alternative medicine as a way of defining its practice. Western medicine is specialized; alternative care is holistic. Scientific practice is evaluated by its outcomes and its coherence with protocols; alternative therapy is not in conformity with the standards of the medical community and is considered to be unorthodox. Little is known about its safety, efficacy, or effectiveness (Gevitz, 1988; Lohr, 1997; U.S. Congress, 1990). The science of medicine is taught and practiced in universities and hospitals; alternative care is not widely taught is U.S. medical or nursing schools and is generally unavailable in American hospitals (Eisenberg et al., 1993; Engebretson Wardell, 1993). Insurance companies and federal and state governments pay for traditional medical care. With few exceptions (acupuncture and chiropractic medicine), alternative therapy has not been included as a health benefit by health insurance companies (Eisenberg, 1997). Recently, however, Oxford Health Plans announced its intention to offer coverage for alternative health care and provided its enrollees with a list of providers and services (Oxford Launches, 1998). There is an elaborate certification and licensing system for health care providers and hospitals; the world of alternative therapy is unregulated and its practitioners are usually unlicensed and uncertified (Eisenberg, 1997).

Ratinoff as a director of fund investment management. Ratinoff will specialize in real estate acquisitions for the western United States. Ratinoff has held senior positions focusing on real estate investments with McDonald Investments, Chase Securities and BT Alex. The San Diego chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management has elected the following individuals as members of its 2005 Executive Council: Nancy Eagle, Harman Asset Management; Pele Wylde, Burnham Real Estate Services; Eddie Goldberg, Sea Property Management; Renee Savage, Capital Growth Properties; Harry Gersten, Union Bank; Carolyn Perriga, Transwestern Commercial; Jim Tostado, Hibiscus Investments; Wade Walker, Griswold RE Management; Sharon Eastman, Realty Executives; and Elizabeth Bzchmann, ConAm Management. The 2005 council members will be installed Nov. 11.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

THOUGH HE WAS ONCE tarred as a “Keating Five” Republican presidential hopeful John McCain is now running hard on a platform of cleaning up a campaign finance system We checked in with CEOs who keep a keen pulse on Washington to get their take on how to stem the stench-and the perception of stench-that often flows with large campaign donations. All agree that reform is badly needed, but each has his own, often unique, take on how to go about it-and whether it will ever really happen. A couple of our CEOs formed their views of the money pit from both sides of the hollow, having recently run for elected office themselves. -MERYL DAVIDS
Political Economy of Money and Finance Macmillan, London; and St. Martins Press, New York, 1999. This is an exceedingly important book. it is probably the most important contribution to the Marxian theory of money, credit and finance to appear in English since the translation of Suzanne de Brunhoffs Marx on Money in 1976. Itoh and Lapavitsas book includes a wealth of information, superb literature reviews, profound analyses of the historical evidence and substantiated discussions of controversial policy issues, whose digestion will keep even the most demanding readers busy for a long time. Their argument is invariably thorough, and their research ranges widely, and admirably, from the logical and historical origins of money to free banking, and from long wave theories to socialist money. In spite of its virtues, and partly because of them, this book will probably not become an icon of the literature, although it will certainly become a major reference in the field (which may well be a better option). The reason is simple: Itoh and Lapavitsas probe very deeply into Marxs theory of money and credit, marshal evidence widely, and engage in a wide variety of debates, not least with Marx himself (eg., they criticise certain aspects of Marxs theory of money, on pp.37-40, and credit, on pp.64-5). As their work is very ambitious, complex and controversial, it is unlikely to be universally acclaimed.

Climate: The environment for Valley auto dealers largely mirrored the conditions affecting the Big 3 automakers in general, which were dealt with massive layoffs, a slowed production cycle and skyrocketing gas prices. As a result, fewer people purchased sports utility vehicles and downsized to smaller cars. Despite those conditions, though, some luxury dealers reported minimal impact from the slowdown–Bob Smith BMW in Calabasas, for example, reported revenues of $93 million as of June 30 while Vista Lexus in Woodland Hills brought in $33.5 million. In Glendale, several dealerships on the Brand Boulevard of Cars received makeovers.

The states airport infrastructure, according to state Aviation Division director Pete Alexander, is a two-fold entity: on one side is Albuquerque International Sunport, on the other are the 60 general aviation airports around the state. General aviation refers to all non-airline or military-related air traffic, including cargo, small passenger, charter, air ambulance and private-use flying. Much of that aviation flows through the states smaller airfields, generally those that serve smaller cities. The airports prominence in both passenger and freight sectors is the reason the majority of federal dollars perennially flow to the states largest airport. But as a result, Alexander laments, the small facilities around the state limp along as best they can.Runway repair rather than replacement is the rule, even for deteriorating strips, since at close to $1 million per runway, four or five repaving projects would bust the agencys budget for the entire year. Fortunately, a newly developed pavement repair material (known as PDC) has proven highly successful in stretching the life spans of deteriorating airstrips.

NEW YORK — Drug stores continue to solidify their reputations as health care destinations, and the trend toward mineral makeup fits in perfectly with that positioning. Although mineral makeup has been used for ages to add color and beauty to the face, the latest wave of such products has a particularly strong health component. Data for June and July show the first signs of softening in the construction sector. According to seasonally adjusted data, the value of construction put in place in July was approximately at the same level as in June and thus 7.4% lower than in May. In the five months to May, the value of construction put in place was 38.7% higher than a year ago; in June and July the difference narrowed to 16.7%. Employment in the construction sector continued to rise. In 2006, the number of workers employed in the construction sector was 7.5% higher than in the previous year. In the first seven months of 2007 it surged by 11%. The hiring of foreign workers has also been on the increase (see SEM 7/2007: 11). The number of workers rose particularly in building completion and general construction, similarly as last year. In terms of worker status, sole proprietors and their employees recorded higher growth rates. Increasingly many firms face difficulties in finding labour. According to business trends in construction, 51% of construction firms reported “a shortage of skilled labour” as a limiting factor to production. If answers are weighted by the number of employees, this share is even higher (58%) - the highest in five years (since these data have been available). The shortage of skilled workers became a significant limiting factor in the second half of 2006 (see graph), coinciding with the boom in construction activity in that period.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Our children dont care about buying $150 sneakers because they dont know the value of $150, said Cassandra Mills, president of the Black Music division of Giant Records. One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity - which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author - you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system–its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Feds actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernsteins novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for todays decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy.

Business Editors The Internet Marketing Edge launches its 10 step method to successfully selling on-line. This book will give you the edge on Internet marketing guaranteed or your money back.
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

This week we met up with Sarah Burrow, manager of the new mezze-style restaurant Starters and Puds on Shakespeare Street in Newcastle City centre. As this is a family-run business, Sarah, 25, has been working hard to ensure everything was perfect in time for the launch. Though Sarah is a self confessed shopaholic, she has had no time to update her wardrobe for summer. We decided that this had to be rectified straightaway.
Britains charity shops face an uncertain future due to the explosion of deep-discounting high street fashion stores like Primark and Matalan and supermarket fashion lines. The Association of Charity Shops annual conference this week will set a challenge for future survival: how to persuade customers to buy second-hand clothes for the same price as new ones. “The upside is that if they buy, say, three new t-shirts for (pounds) 10, they are likely to be throwing something else out. That means they have more to donate, but we just have to keep up interest from people wanting to buy from us. We have to diversify all the time.”

These slip-over bug costumes are easy Prepare to be bombarded this Halloween by a swarm of flying and crawling insects. But dont get out the bug spray-our colorful creatures are charming pests. Made of bright felt, the padded costumes slip on over leotard and tights, or shorts and a shirt. Because all seams are sewn on the right side of the fabric, the suits are easy to assemble-just stitch, then trim with scissors or pinking shears. You can complete one in an afternoon or two; total cost per bug is $20 to $30.
A pirates sash, a musketeers blouse and a 1920s flapper girl fringe are some of the many costumes created out of Thad Hansens love of reading about the past. Hansen is owner of Salt Lake Costume, and in his business, researching history is a necessity in designing wardrobes for different time periods. As a youngster Thatcher read Hardy Boys books along with John Jakes “American Bicentennial Series,” which follows a family line through a number of centuries and adventures. But now some of his favorites are J.R.R. Tolkiens “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” as well as Alexander Dumas “Man in the Iron Mask” and “Count of Monte Cristo.” “Those books (Tolkiens) are well-done, and I kind of like fantasy- type books with different words,” said Hansen.
Halloween is coming. Time to put on a costume and have some fun. But some animals get to dress up almost every day–not for fun, but for survival. Its a fish-eat-crab world out there. Octopuses, starfish, and lobsters also love to dine on crabmeat. But the decorator crabs pictured here have a tricky way to cover up and hide from their enemies. They simply “decorate” themselves with parts of plants or animals from the seafloor. And then, ta-dah! They can scurry along almost unseen. Other kinds of animals, too, use “dressing up” as a way to hide from predators.

In the freight transport sector, maritime transport saw the largest increase, road transport increased significantly, while railway transport recorded a slight drop. Freight transport by rail declined by 5.3%, while freight transport by road increased by 28.9%. Maritime freight transport posted the largest increase in the first quarter year on year, by 34.3%, while the volume of transhipment slightly declined. Freight transport by rail has increased by 4.3% annually on average in the last four years, but in the first quarter of 2008, year-on-year growth of road freight transport nevertheless significantly exceeded the average growth in the last four years (18.6%). Maritime transport growth in the first quarter of 2008 was also much higher than the average growth in the last four years (15.2%). Harbour freight transport has increased annually by 9.6% on average in the last four years. Among transport activities, road freight transport has recorded the strongest growth in the structure of value added in transport, storage and communications in the last few years. In 2007, the three main transport activities within the transport, storage and communications sector were road freight transport, which employed 20,697 or 37.4% of employees, railway freight transport (7,991 or 14.4%) and bus transport (3,992 or 7.2%) (with sole proprietors counted as employees). The corresponding shares of value added generated by these activities (except that the third highest value added was generated by shipping) are 25.0%, 11.6% and 6.3% (see graph). Looking at the structure of value added in transport, storage and communications, in 2003-2007 the largest increase within transport activities (by 4.5 p.p.) was recorded in the share of road freight transport, while the shares of railway freight transport and shipping decreased by 1.3 p.p. and 2.4 p.p., respectively (a similar direction and intensity of changes was also observed in the structure of employees). The decreased importance of shipping can be attributed to Slovenias entry into the EU and the consequent loss of part of the market. In this period, the number of employees in the transport segment of transport, storage and communications sector rose by 4,453, to 41,426. The number of employees in road freight transport increased by 4,315, while railway transport and bus transport recorded fewer employees than in 2003 (320 and 274, respectively). In terms of sustainable development, the increase in the volume of road freight transport and the decline in the shares of railway transport and bus transport are not favourable.
Freight transport saw a surge in harbour transport and an over 10% increase in road transport. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 5.4% in the final quarter, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport rose even more, by 9.7%. Although road freight transport declined by a few per cent in Q3, its annual increase in 2006 still reached a high 9.8%, which contributed significantly to the total increase in the transport, storage, and communications sector (road freight transport generates almost a quarter of the value added in this sector). Maritime freight transport fell by 6.4% in 2006 after having surged by 41.7% in 2005 amid the boom in this branch. In the final quarter of 2006, the volume of maritime transport already rose by 4.4%, year on year. Harbour freight transport recorded the biggest increase in Q4, by 17.0%. It also enjoyed the highest annual growth within freight transport (22.5%). Road freight transport has been growing strongly in the past few years, including in 2006, due to the increasing international transport (see the graph). The volume of international road freight transport increased by 12.5% in 2006 while national road freight transport even fell by 3.5%. Within international transport, cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country) recorded the highest increase of 16.4%. Measured in tonne kilometres, international transport comprised 81.2% of the total transport of goods by road while national transport totalled 18.8% of the total road freight transport (if the volume of transport is measured solely in tonnes of goods carried and the travelled distances are disregarded, national transport prevails with a 82.5% share). 56.3% of international transport was performed by companies, while slightly over 50% of national transport was carried out by sole entrepreneurs. Own-account transport comprised 3.0% of international transport and 31.1% of national transport (the rest was transport for hire or reward).
Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.

I. INTRODUCTION This study empirically examines person-to-person transactions within the Internet market known as eBay. In this virtual market of unseen participants and products, buyers and sellers face the risks of repudiation, as the counter party may deny the agreement after the fact. Buyers assume risks associated with lack of seller integrity and asymmetric information about the particular product, as the buyer is typically required to send payment before the seller ships the product. In addition, for many eBay transactions, the cost of enforcing a contract is high relative to the transactions value, resulting in a practical absence of legal enforcement. (2) By providing a history of trade execution information, eBay benefits market participants by reducing information asymmetries while achieving substantial transaction cost economies. Market participants relate personal experiences, which eBay uses to calculate a numerical reputation measure for each user. Market participants, in turn, can use this reputation measure to assess counter party risk and adjust bidding behavior accordingly.

Elliott points out that managed care organizations like HMOs and PPOs are requiring members to have coverage. In addition, a number of states have adopted more stringent licensing requirements for chiropractors that include mandatory malpractice coverage. “Theres an increase in the pie itself,” Elliott notes, in explaining why National Union and other companies have opted to enter the field at this time, adding that even chiropractors that had coverage may be looking for higher limits to meet HMO and PPO requirements. “Theres a real need in the marketplace for a strong company with experience in professional liability.”Another factor that has induced new entrants is the fact that, despite increased competition, “rates have been holding fairly steady,” Elliott says. “Premiums are relatively small to begin with so, to a great extent, competition is based on coverage,” he adds. The National Union program offers both claims-made and occurrence policies, with defense costs provided outside the limits. Coverage is provided for manipulation under anesthesia, where allowed. Limits range from 100/300 to $1 million/$3 million. “Basically, we cover anything thats allowed under state law,” Elliott says, explaining that “this industry is pretty well looked after. State laws are pretty strict.”
Edward Bliss Jr. is a beleaguered chiropractor who adjusts by day and wrestles by night in director J. Todd Andersons The Naked Man. Not since Danny Aiellos portrayed a DC in Adrian Lynes 1990 film Jacobs Ladder has a chiropractor been the protagonist of a film. Back home, Edward has to confront his father, a pharmacist, who still hasnt forgiven him for not following in his professional footsteps. In one sequence, the father yells repeatedly, “Dont you see, Edward? Drugs are the answer.” Clearly, Edward is a nondrug prescribing innate kind of guy. According to one reviewer (we havent yet seen this “straight to video” production), the movie features “some of the most bone– jarring sequences of someone adjusting the spine that Ive ever seen.” (Not exactly the kind of exaggerated image the profession needs!)
The Chiropractor, however, would be one of the longest lasting and best known of chiropractic periodicals (continuing in monthly publication until November/December 1961), and serving multiple functions along the way. Not the least of these would be its role as the “official organ” of the several professional societies BJ. founded and led: the Universal Chiropractors Association (todays ACA) and the Chiropractic Health Bureau (todays ICA).The masthead indicated that the new periodical was published by the Palmer School of Chiropractic and copyrighted by B.J. Palmer. Single copies were available for 5 cents each, or a years subscription for 50 cents, “which may be sent in postage stamps.” The first issue listed a number of articles on its cover:This first issue made what was probably liberal use of photographic images, in addition to the more standard line drawings of the times. Among the imagery was a photo of Harvey Lillard, one of the elder Palmers (the photo would appear again in various advertisements and in a textbook, The Science of Chiropractic, published by B.J. in 1906); and a picture of Old Dad Chiros class in Santa Barbara, California, during July 1903.

Secure Paper Shredding

November 22nd, 2008

Dear Heloise: Throughout the year, we shred old documents that are no longer needed that have credit-card numbers, Social Security numbers and bank-account numbers on them. Our shredder, which works perfectly fine, is an older model that only shreds in strips. I became suspicious of throwing those strips in the regular trash, envisioning some opportunistic crook taping the strips back together and stealing our identity. Dear Kathy: Well, this is one way to prevent anyone from getting any personal information from your trash. However, its highly unlikely that someone would rummage through the trash, put those strips together and obtain any useful information. But if it makes you feel better, why not? — Heloise Dear Heloise: When I was going to a dressy evening concert, I was wearing black. I worried about not being seen by cars in the garage or on the long walk to the concert hall. I pinned a crystal brooch to the lower back hip area of my jacket. It picked up lights, and I received several compliments. –C. Southworth in Central California
Many paper recyclers who enter the document destruction business are familiar with aspects of plant layout and matching production equipment (balers and screens) to anticipated volume. But the information destruction industry also brings new considerations, such as choosing the right mobile shredding truck for on-site customers and shredding equipment that provides optimal particle size. TRUCKING. Paper recyclers entering the secure shredding sector may have some familiarity with selecting equipment for on-site customer use if they have ever placed balers in warehouses or store rooms.

Cabinet choices Cabinets usually devour the bulk of a budget during a kitchen remodel. Because they are a major investment, youll need to sort through the available options and make choices with confidence. Heres how: - If existing cabinets are of good quality, are in excellent working condition and the layout functions well, the most affordable option is to freshen them up by restaining or painting. Another alternative, refacing, involves installing a new veneer on the exterior of the cabinet box and replacing the doors and drawer fronts, and should be handled by a professional.

PhotographyIt has long been known that certain substances, when illuminated, undergo permanent visible changes. In the early part of the nineteenth century, these materials were sometimes used to make photogenic drawings, for example,

The first known photograph, made in 1826. It shows the courtyard outside the room of Joseph-Nic#x00E9;phore Niepce.

Photography might just be the best way to capture New York Citys snappy charms. Certainly from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, photographers such as Diane Arbus, Weegee and Richard Avedon made their reputations by getting out and about on the citys busy streets, immortalising whatever they saw. Christened the New York School, these snappers always worked in a democratic vein, interested in everyone, no matter if it was a couple kissing in a cinema or two children pulling faces on a sidewalk. Early Cameras Have you ever looked at a photograph and wondered how it was made? The ancient Greeks were able to produce images in darkened rooms. They let light enter the room through a small hole in one wall. The image appeared upside down on the opposite wall. This was called a camera obscura. Artists used these images to make sketches. The word photography comes from the Greek words meaning to write or draw with light.

Businesses eager not to give offense, lawyers eager to litigate, enemies of custom eager to bleach and flatten all do their best to grind the day down. But if we keep it in our homes and churches, and, most important, in our hearts and our actions, then we will know when to keep it with our lips.

SAN FRANCISCO — Smith Fong Co., manufacturer of Plyboo[R] bamboo architectural plywood and flooring, today announced it has secured certification according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and established the sustainability of its bamboo forest resource, enabling the company to produce the worlds first range of FSC-certified bamboo plywood and flooring. The independent European FSC-certifier Institut fur Marktokologie (IMO) was impressed with our forestry practices and agreed that if we could meet the same FSC standards for a tree forest, it would certify our bamboo source, Smith Fong president and founder Dan Smith said. We have been working with the bamboo forests and telling our story for more than a decade now, and were grateful to both FSC and IMO for validating our efforts. We are pleased that Smith Fong has expanded the North American marketplace for certified products by offering bamboo plywood and flooring with the FSC label, FSC-US President Corey Brinkema said. FSC is the worlds most highly respected certification for forest products. Whether a product is made of a traditional wood species, or a less traditional non-timber forest resource like bamboo, it is important for consumers to know that the forest is being managed to high social and environmental standards.

Bamboo, cork, and linoleum are handsome, durable, and eco-friendly * Move over, wood and vinyl: Cork, linoleum, and bamboo are fast becoming the most stylish alternatives to traditional flooring materials–and theyre practical and environmentally friendly to boot. Cork and linoleum have been available for decades, but new styles, great colors, and durable finishes have led to rediscovery and renewed appreciation. Bamboo, one of the oldest building materials, is a relative newcomer to the natural flooring market; its finding success with a totally new look–plank flooring. First produced more than 150 years ago, linoleum is made primarily from natural materials: linseed oil (derived from flax), ground cork and/or pine rosins, wood flour, and natural pigments. Available in sheets (with jute backing) or tiles (with polyester backing), it costs somewhat more than vinyl flooring products: The 79-inch-wide sheets are $3 to $5 per square foot, installed; the tiles, available in 13- and 20-inch squares, are slightly higher. However, the appearance and virtues of the linoleum products make them worth consideration.

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.
